What Should You Do to Unlock Your Cell Phone?
You may have wondered what the difference between a locked cell phone and unlocked cell phone lies in. Now, let’s start with this. Some cell phonesare designed to use a Subscriber Identification Module (SIM) card, or microchip that stores subscriber data. The SIM card is issued by a carrier and provides cell phone service by activating any phone into which it is inserted. A locked phone will only recognize a SIM card from a particular carrier while If the cell phone is unlocked, it will recognize a SIM card from any carrier. We can say the fundamental difference between a locked cell phone and unlocked cell phone lies in whether it is “loyal” to a certain wireless carriers.
Basically an unlocked cell phone is not tied down to one carrier or another. Also it only applies to phones that require SIM Cards. By getting an unlocked phone, you can use that phone with any GSM carrier in the US or abroad. All you have to do is place the SIM card in the phone. Also, the resale value of the unlocked phone is greater than that of a locked, carrier specific phone.
You may want to know whether your cell phone is locked or not. Someone has offered an easy way to find out for sure: Find a friend whose phone is known to be unlocked. Have your friend place his or her SIM card in your phone, and then call your friend’s number. If your phone rings, you know your phone is unlocked. If your phone simply generates an error message, then it’s locked.
Then, the idea about unlocking your cell phone may sprout. Yeah, you can really do it. You can find companies that unlock cell phones on the internet. Some companies are able to unlock the phones remotely, meaning if you send them the IMEI number on the phone, they send you a code to unlock the phone. Some others require you to send them the phone. Each model is different, so you will have to search a little. Charges range from $5.00 to $20.00 depending on the model of the phone and which company you go to.
Usually, if you’ve been a customer of theirs for some time, they will provide you with an unlock code for free. This is, by far, the best way to get your phone unlocked. If your Phone unlocks with a code, in most cases your service provider will provide it, by just asking for it. It is a common request for people traveling overseas. Many will email you with the code and instructions for you to unlock your phone. After entering the unlock codes, the phone will say something like “SIM is not restricted” or “Restriction off” or something encouraging.
To know if your phone has been successfully unlocked, you can borrow a SIM from a friend who has an account with a different wireless service provider and see if it works in your phone. If it works, then your phone is already unlocked, but if it creates some sort of error message and doesn’t work, your phone is still locked.
